Read Psalm 68
Take a moment for some self-reflection. What does power and control mean to you? If you are like me, being personally in control brings comfort. Things can be done exactly the way I want them to be done and when I want them to be done. Whether this is with tasks around the house, work, or relationships, having control is what brings me a sense of peace. Oppositely, when I am not in control, stresses arise. How will things get done? Will they even get done? Is someone else going to do them and receive all the praise?
Psalm 68 is an explicit reminder that God is the one who is in power and control. Not me, but Him. God brings goodness into the world and drives out darkness. He is our source of salvation. For me, this is both humbling and difficult to hear. I don’t have to put the weight of the world on my own shoulders, but can I trust God with it? The simple answer would be, “Yes, of course!” Realistically, though, it’s hard to live out. Luckily, Psalm 68 gives us some guidance. As God’s people, we are to respond with joyful praise (verse 4), spreading this great news (verse 11) and dwelling in the joys of salvation (verse 12).
Is there something that you hold tightly to? What would it look like to fully give it over to God, today?
God, today I recognize that you are in true control. Help me to trust not in my own abilities, but in you. You are creator and Lord of all. Amen.
