Etch this into your being: God is our hope. God is the executor of justice for the oppressed. God is the One who gives food to the hungry. God is the One who sets the prisoners free. God is the One watching over the migrant, the refugee, the sojourner. God is the upholder of the widow, the orphan, the fatherless. God is the Ruler who reigns forever, for all generations!
In the middle of a heated election year, don’t those reminders bring a balm to your heart? The outcome of November's voting matters little in light of God's rule! We, the children of God, don’t put our trust in princes or presidents for our salvation and hope. We need not engage in the divisions and conflicts swirling around us that can easily suck us under and drown us in anxiety, fear, and disunity. May we be different as His Body!
Dietrich Bonhoeffer, who lived in a more chaotic political time than we can even imagine, had these words to say: "No evil can befall us; whatever men may do to us, they cannot but serve the God who is secretly revealed as love and rules the world and our lives.” Let us rest in the words of Psalm 146 and the great cloud of faithful men and women who have gone before us boldly, bravely, brazenly trusting in their God's reign over their political circumstances!
Turn your eyes upon Jesus
Look full in his wonderful face
And the things of earth will grow strangely dim
In the light of his glory and grace-Helen H. Lemmel
