Psalm 48 is a beautiful, worshipful song that is filled with attributes of God! I was encouraged in reading this Psalm by these characteristics of God. It also got me thinking about how my heart was made to worship and I seek these characteristics in things of the world.
• Joy of all the Earth (vs 2)- In this case, His dwelling place is the joy of all the Earth. God gives good gifts and there is certainly great pleasure to be found them, but He is where the ultimate joy of all the Earth is found.
• Fortress (vs 3)- A fortress is a place of defense or security. I often look to finances, affirmation from others in my life, control, even busyness for security which clearly cannot provide the security my heart is longing for and am thankful true security comes from God.
• His steadfast love (vs 9)- Steadfast means firmly fixed in place or unwavering. Again, this cannot be said for any earthly relationship.
• His city is established forever (vs 8)- Kingdoms, nations, governments come and go, but God’s kingdom is established forever.
• Filled with righteousness (vs 9) God is the only one who is morally right/justifiable.
• Our guide forever (vs 14)- Not politicians, social media, culture, but God is our guide forever!
Where do we find joy, security, guidance? May we seek and rest in God and his steadfast love, the only place true security can be found. May He guide us forever!
