Tremble, O earth, at the presence of the Lord. ~Psalm 114:7
God is the Lord of creation. In a cement laden city like Dallas, it can be hard to remember the grandness of all he created – waterfalls, mountains, rivers, deserts.
God did not create them and leave them, but he is constant in upholding, restoring, and showing his glory and power through all his creation. As this psalm reminds us, his creation can act as a conduit of grace and directs our hearts and worship towards him. We read how God parted the sea during the redemption of Israel, he sustained the Israelites by springing water from a rock, and he parted the Jordan for Joshua and his people so that they could enter the land He promised to them. His presence with them, confirmed through creation. His power with them, displayed through creation. His provision of them, carried out through creation.
Their story is our story. How have we experienced the Lord’s presence, power, and provision through his creation?
As I was reading through this psalm, I was reminded of a story from a biography of Amy Carmichael, a missionary to children in India a little more than a century ago. As she was sitting near a drastic waterfall praying, she heard the voice from heaven say, “Can I who did this, not do that?”.
Is there anything in your life going on that seems too big to handle? I hope the grandeur of his creation reminds us that he is sovereign and can do big things.
So let us this day glory in creation and the good, magnificent story of the Lord’s redemption it unveils.
