Psalm 150 is appropriately titled ‘Let Everything Praise the LORD’. This short psalm that ends the Book of Psalms, is simple in its theme. It calls us to praise God in all places- ‘in his holy house of worship’ and ‘under the open skies’ and to praise God for both what He does- ‘his mighty deeds’ or ‘his acts of power’ and who He is ‘according to his excellent greatness’. It calls us to praise Him together- as a body and as those who inhabit the earth, ‘let every living, breathing creature praise God!’.
The funny thing is that praising God doesn’t just bring glory to Him, it helps us. We forget God’s past activity and in turn fail to see what He is doing today. Praising God helps us to recognize God’s activity in the past and helps us unmuddle our memories (thanks Jeremy, for reminding us of this through 2nd Peter). Take some time today (or this week) to write down God’s mighty deeds/acts of power- what God has done for you/in your life. Write them down to help you remember and turn to praise God!
God’s mighty deeds that I wrote down this week:
• Saving me
• Becoming man
• Flooding the earth
• Creating the earth
• Bringing me to know Him
• Given me community when I had none
• Transforming my mind/heart
• Sustained me
Similarly, we can praise God for who He is! Remembering who He is helps shift my perspective outside of myself/my circumstances and brings peace. Take some time to write down who God is and praise Him for His excellent greatness.
God’s excellent greatness includes (things I wrote down this week):
• His compassion
• His faithfulness
• His patience
• His mercy
• He is a refuge/safe place
• His steadfastness
• His righteousness
• His generosity
• His care- especially in the little things
I encourage you to praise God for the things you write down and then also share with your community- whether that be your DNA, GC, spouse, roommate, etc.—that we may praise God for these things together.
Let everything that has breath praise the Lord! Praise the Lord!
