Psalm 125 is a part of the group of Psalms (120-134) collectively known as the Psalms of Ascent. These were the songs that the people of Israel would sing as they journeyed to Jerusalem or possibly while ascending the steps of the Temple.
As I read through this Psalms of Ascent I am reminded that we are too look upward and remember to trust in the LORD with all our heart. Verse 1 says “They that trust in the LORD shall be as Mount Zion, which cannot be removed, but abides for ever.” I am so very grateful that the emphasis lies on the object of our trust, our LORD! To move Mount Zion was an absurd thought but to trust in the LORD and remember He is our Rock and Redeemer gives us the assurance of a steadfast hope that is secure in the One who created us and loves us. We can have sure hope in our LORD that abides forever even when the circumstances around us are uncertain and we are weary.
Verse 2 says, “As the mountains are round about Jerusalem, so the LORD is round about his people from henceforth even forever.” Again, we have the word here forever, reminding us of the truth that the LORD is with His people (those who believe and trust Him) are secure forever because of His amazing grace.
As we continued through the Psalm we are reminded that although the LORD is with us and surrounds we are not exempt from trials and sin in this broken world. I pray we will continue to fix our eyes on Jesus, “looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the hand of the throne of God.” (Heb 12:2)
I often thought of this hymn I used to sing at our church as I studied this psalm:
Trust and Obey
When we walk with the LORD in the light of His Word, What a glory He sheds on our way;
While we do His good will, He abides with us still, And with all who will trust and obey.Trust and obey, for there’s no other way to be happy in Jesus, but to trust and obey.
Not a shadow can rise, not a cloud skies, but His smile quickly drives it away; Not a doubt or a fear, Not a sigh or a tear, can abide while we trust and obey.
Not a burden we bear, not a sorrow a share, but our toil He doth richly repay; Not a grief or a loss, not a frown or a cross, but is blest if we trust and obey.
But we never can prove the delights of His love, until all the altar we lay; For the favor He shows, and the joy He bestows, are for them who will trust and obey.
Then in fellowship sweet, we will sit at His feet, or we’ll walk by His side in the way; What He says we will do, Where He sends we will go, never fear, only trust and obey.
(written by John H Sammis and Daniel B Towner)
May we walk in comfort, hope, joy and trust in the LORD today, remembering He is steadfast and faithful always.
“The LORD is my strength and my shield in him my heart trusts and I am helped; my heart exults, and with my song I give thanks to him.” Psalm 28:7
