Psalm 93:
The LORD reigns; he is robed in majesty;
the LORD is robed; he has put on strength as his belt.
Yes, the world is established; it shall never be moved.
Your throne is established from of old;
you are from everlasting.
The floods have lifted up, O LORD,
the floods have lifted up their voice;
the floods lift up their roaring.
Mightier than the thunders of many waters,
mightier than the waves of the sea,
the LORD on high is mighty!
Your decrees are very trustworthy;
holiness befits your house,
O LORD, forevermore.
During this time when some are in the midst of lent and/or fasting, our focus may be on the emotional toil, sin, uncertainty, strife, heartbreak, feelings of being stuck, or a host of other reasons for entering into a sacred time.
The psalm asks for a shift in our focus - to the majesty of God. The Psalmist covers several directions that may attempt to divert our eyes:
instead of constant changes and upheaval surrounding us, let's rest in knowing "the world is established; it shall never be moved"
rather than leaning on nature or outside forces to calm frantic nerves, acknowledge that "mightier than the waves of the sea, the LORD on high is mighty"
in place of public opinion, status, past hurts fueling us, allow the one who "has put on strength as his belt" to sustain us.
God is described in so many amazing ways in this passage - trustworthy, holy, everlasting, established, mighty, robed in majesty, reigning - so take your pick & hold fast!
