For me, I think this Psalm is so relatable, especially right now. The Psalmist is so tired of the ways of the world that he’s begging God to rescue him from the lies of those who say you can find peace apart from the Lord. The Psalmist is choosing to say no to the ways of the world and yes to God.
I think Eugene Peterson explains this really well in his book A Long Obedience in the Same Direction. He says, “Psalm 120 is the decision to take one way over against the other. It is the turning point marking the transition from a dreamy nostalgia for a better life to a rugged pilgrimage of discipleship in faith, from complaining about how bad things are to pursuing all things good.”
If I’m being honest, sometimes it’s easy for me to believe the lies that the world is telling me: my worth comes from the amount of money I make, I’ll find all the rest I need on my next vacation, the next season of my life will be better than this current season I’m in, etc. I think this Psalm is a humble reminder that this world is broken and nothing here on earth can fully satisfy us. Only God can do that.
I want to leave you with this promise of Jesus. In John 16 he says, “I’ve told you all this so that trusting me, you will be unshakable and assured, deeply at peace. In this godless world you will continue to experience difficulties. But take heart! I’ve conquered the world.” – John 16:33 (MSG)
