It feels fitting to reflect on a Psalm for the Sabbath after Easter. After the resurrection of Christ, His victory over death, we remember His purpose has been unchanging from the beginning, for Creator to dwell with creation forever.
This relationship and dwelling of Creator and Creation finds home in the Sabbath, where “the righteous will flourish like a palm tree, they will grow like a cedar of Lebanon; planted in the house of the Lord, they will flourish in the courts of God. They will still bear fruit in old age, they will stay fresh and green,” (Psalm 92:12-14, NIV). The righteous will be rooted, find their home in the house of the Lord because of the work of Christ we remembered this Advent season.
Just as it takes a tree much longer to grow than grass, when I see “all evildoers flourish” (Psalm 92:7a), I am so often tempted to ignore the patient journey of faith that the Sabbath asks of us, and instead trust on myself for growth and success, forgetting “they are doomed to destruction forever,” (Psalm 92:7b).
My prayer is that on our journey of faith, we remember what God has done, and accept our limitations, embracing the blessing of limitation and weakness and allowing God to nourish and water our roots, building our home in the house of God.
